Chapter 12 - Keeping an Eye on Things (Turbo chargers and Gauges)

Turbo charged engines need to be monitored closely to be sure that all systems are working correctly. If a component fails, or a fueling or spark issue occurs, disastrous results can happen. By closely watching key indicators, component failures will be quickly recognized and engine damage may be prevented. Here is a list of a few gauges that should be included as part of a complete turbo charger system.

Boost Gauge

A boost gauge will allow you to monitor boost pressure entering the manifold. Boost spikes caused by boost creep or wastegate failures will likely cause major engine damage. The boost gauge will be your first indication of boost fluctuations.

AFR Gauge

Another very important value to monitor is the air/fuel ratio. Making sure that the AFR stays at a safe value is critical. A lean condition will cause detonation and may break pistons. The AFR gauge should be a wideband type, as narrowband gauges will not accurately read AFRs outside of 14.7:1. Problems with fuel systems, exhaust leaks and other malfunctions may likely affect the AFR.

Fuel Pressure

Knowing where the fuel pressure is at gives a clear picture on the health of the fuel system. Failing or inadequate pumps, fuel clogs and other restrictions will show up here. Inadequate fueling will result in an unsafe AFR. The fuel pressure gauge is the first line of defense in case of a fuel system failure.

Pyrometer (Exhaust Gas Temperature)

The EGT gauge is not mandatory if you have an AFR gauge. The EGT will start to read high if the AFR goes lean. If you have room to mount it, it adds a measure of safety to your monitoring system.

Oil Pressure

Although most cars are equipped with an oil pressure gauge, it is a good idea to install a more reliable and accurate aftermarket gauge.

Transmission Oil Temperature

If you have an automatic transmission, you should be aware of the transmission’s temperature while it is under extreme conditions. A transmission temperature gauge will let you know if it is overheating.
